Mandate:
The Fire Department is an arm of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF). Its main objective is to save lives and property in the event of a fire or incident requiring the rescue of persons and to educate the general public on Fire hazards and safety.
 
The department responds to a variety of emergency calls for services ranging from: structural fires, wildland fires, vehicular fires, aircraft emergencies, medical emergencies, vehicular accidents, hazardous material (oil spill) and landslides.
 
The RGPF Fire Department was first established in the 1700’s, when the men had to extinguish fires using bucket brigade. In 1792, 2/3 of the town of St. George was destroyed by fire, and in 1843 there was the introduction of the first fire appliance.
 
The Fire Department was established through Chapter 103 of Volume 1 of the 2010 Continuous Revised Laws of Grenada.
 
Section 3:  Establishment of fire fighting service
There shall be organised and established a fire fighting service under the supervision and control of the Chief of Police comprising the following:
  1. the Fire Brigade consisting of such members of the Police Force as shall be posted for duty as firemen, such other members of the Police Force as may, from time to time, be called out for duty as firemen, and such other fit and proper persons as may be appointed by the Chief of Police as members of the Fire Brigade;
  2. the Volunteer Fire Brigade consisting of the members of the Royal Grenada Special Reserve Police Force and such other fit and proper persons as may be appointed by the Chief of Police as members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Additional, to the department’s function of responding to emergencies, the department also have the following co-functions:
  1. Inspection of Premises for Refreshment House Licences, Licences for School, etc.
  2. Training in Basic Fire Safety and related topics
  3. Internal Training of Regular and Volunteer Fire Fighters
  4. Monitoring of Evacuation Drills
  5. Fire Prevention Outreach
  6. Fire Extinguisher Placement Survey and Inspections
  7. Humanitarian Service
At present the department has a staffing of seventy-one (71) persons comprising off:
  1. One (1) Assistant Superintendent of Police
  2. One (1) Inspector
  3. Three (3) Sergeants
  4. Twelve (12) Corporals
  5. Forty-two (42) Constables
  6. Six (6) Rural Constables
  7. Six (6) Civilian Staff
NB: Of these seventy-one (71) persons there are four (4) persons on suspension for active duty thus leaving sixty-seven (67) persons on active duty at our seven (7) active stations.
 
The Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Fire department has a very active Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Brigade is sanctioned by section 3 of the FIRE BRIGADES ACT Chapter 103 of Volume 1 of the 2010 Continuous Revised Laws of Grenada which establishes the firefighting service.
 
The Act provides for the brigade to consist of the members of the Royal Grenada Special Reserve Police Force and such other fit and proper persons as may be appointed by the Chief of Police as members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade.
